When considering fillings for repairing cavities or small chips in your teeth, several filling materials are available. While older “silver” or amalgam fillings are advantageous for certain situations, composite, or tooth-colored fillings have become more durable and more able to closely match the appearance of natural tooth structure.
Another benefit of tooth-colored fillings is that they have the capability of bonding to tooth structure whereas silver fillings rely on mechanical retention, or being held in place by the walls of the tooth cavity preparation. Also in many cases, composite fillings can be repaired by addition of more composite material.
